On June 12, 1898, Emilio Aguinaldo declared the independence of the Filipinos and the birth of the Philippine Republic in Cavite el Viejo (Kawit), Cavite. The Filipino national flag was officially unfurled for the first time at 4:20 PM. (the same flag was actually unfurled, albeit unfficially, on May 28, 1898 at the Teatro Caviteno in Cavite Nuevo---now Cavite City---right after the battle of Alapan, Imus, Cavite).

Declaration of Philippine Independence.

Ambrosio Rianzares Bautista solemnly read the "Act of the Declaration of Independence" which he himself wrote. The declaration was signed by 98 persons. One of the signers was an American, L.M. Johnson, Colonel of Artillery.

At the same time, the Philippine National Anthem, then known as "Marcha Nacional Filipina", was played by the band. It was composed by Professor Julian Felipe but it had no lyrics yet. To suit the music, Professor Jose Palma wrote a poem which he entitled, "Filipinas" which was published for the first time in the first anniversary issue of the revolutionary newspaper "La Independencia" on Sept 3, 1899.
