On Aug 31, 1896 Emilio Aguinaldo led the revolt in Kawit and Mariano Alvarez
liberated Noveleta. In Kawit, the fleeing Spanish friar left behind in the convent 1,100 pesos in gold, 800 in silver. These formed the initial funds of the Revolution in Cavite. On Sept 2, 1896 In Nueva Ecija, 2,000 revolucionarios under Mariano Llanera, municipal captain of Cabiao, and Pantaleon Belmonte, municipal captain of Gapan, attacked the Spanish garrison in San Isidro. The assault was carried out in a flamboyant manner. Wearing red ribbons, the revolutionaries first paraded down the principal streets to the music of the Cabiao Musikong Bumbong band. Their leaders cut dashing figures on horseback. ![]() Filipino rebels in action Then, armed only with bolos and pointed sticks, the revolutionary soldiers attacked. The Filipinos held the town for three days but were forced out after a furious battle against fresh Spanish troops led by Major Lopez Arteaga. On Sept 3, 1896 Emilio Aguinaldo, with 1,000 men, won a signal victory in Imus against 500 soldiers commanded by General Ernesto Aguirre. The Spanish general dropped his fine Toledo sword, which Aguinaldo found and made his own. Engraved on the blade was the year it was forged, 1869, the year of Aguinaldo's birth. The Magdalo troops also picked up 30 Remingtons plus ammunition. |
